My mate who has a Mitsubishi tipper truck for his building work tells me he is on the lookout for that kind of truck. All his work is quite local and only does about 50 or so miles a week. So doesn't care about mpg. I'll post on here how he gets on.

Well if he does, remind him that it'll be left hand drive, slow, incredibly noisy inside and depending on age, it'll have limited spares availablility and what he can get will be pricey. The drum brakes will be terrible to the point of being dangerous. There'll be no power steering and likely a terribly tired and vague column gearchange. Quite probably a beam axle at the front leading to appalling steering/handling. A hefty cast iron block engine at the front and a light back end meaning that it will try to spin around if he boots it and will probably fly off through the nearest hedge at the slightest excuse. Not that he'll be able to open the throttle much without the back wheels losing traction and spinning anyway. The ten MPG won't be too useful either and even 'classic' insurance could be steep.

Other than that, it's all good news though .

In danger of turning this into the "cars" thread but I've always loved American cars and pickups - don't care how crap they are - my dad's mate had all sorts back in the 70s and persuaded my dad to change his Escort for a 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible - can you imagine how excited I was when he picked me up from school in one of these, top down?

Practicalities simply don't matter, as no-one in their right mind would buy one as the car they do the shopping in, or take to work everyday! Now for polishing up like a new pin and cruising around town on a sunny summer Sunday. OH YES, BABY!!

Or a 1968 Plymouth GTX 426 Hemi



Both of which will return a 13 second quarter mile and hit sixty in around 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of aound 150mph!

Prefer the Chevy... Good point though, and if I were in the market for something like that, I'd do my research and buy something that was both worth driving *AND* looked good!

But I wouldn't get bored of owning any of the above classics, simply because they hark from an era when cars were hand-built, individually styled and oozed SOUL, unlike the soul-LESS, boring, homogenised monstrosities mostly produced today, thanks to computers!!
