I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a proper conversation with someone on a phone (mobile or landline), than typing messages to them on a keyboard, as it's a much more 'real'/human experience. Emails are ok, using a proper computer (PC or laptop), as you've got access to a decent-sized screen and keyboard, but fiddling around with the tiny screens and keypads on mobile phones is in comparison a total ballache, especially when there's a fair amount you want to say...

And the thought of posting on forums, via a bloody smartphone, also fills me with dread... The predictive text function, for starters, and how it fucks up the spelling of words, and the typos it causes, would make me want to smash the bloody thing against a wall!

The bit about texting vs. talking to an actual human being - couldn't agree more. I do struggle with tiny keys as my hands/fingers are completely out of proportion with the rest of me, and half my time texting is spent correcting where I missed the correct keys.

Sometimes texting can be useful, for imparting/receiving job details that can later be referred to rather than relying on my memory. But text conversations quickly sap my will to live. I particularly hate when someone ends their text with a question, usually something banal which doesn't need to be asked, and then I'm made to waste more of my day composing a reply

What might be handy would be if I could just speak a message, as you would do with voicemail, and the recipient's phone transcribes it to something he can read. I wonder if that sort of thing exists? Save my sausage fingers to do what they do best (look out laydees, these little piggies have got the day off!)

Is your landline with Virgin? We've also got call barring, and caller display, so if I don't recognise the number and/or I'm too busy to take the call, I ignore it and it goes straight to voicemail. Nuisance callers very rarely leave messages

So are you still paying for your landline, despite not using it? You should get it cancelled.

It's part of the overall tv/broadband package. And I've got telephone preference scheme set up on my mobile anyway.

Ok, fair enough, although you could also have the same set up on your landline... Then you wouldn't get any nuisance calls, and you could actually use the facility you pay for indirectly - if that is you bought a decent new handset to use it with

I could but I make maybe two calls a week and they don't last more than a minute. So what's the point? Besides I have a landline at work. That's the number I usually give out.

TPS is useless against overseas nuisance calls, which is what most of them are these days. Call blocker is the way to go. Even though we were registered with TPS, we used to get numerous nuisance calls. Call blocker stops the lot.

Yes absolutely, which is why we have both, and so have had none of that crap since.

I used to enjoy winding up the scam merchants from call centres in India, simply by being creative in how I completely wasted their time, and when I got bored, laughed and told them *exactly* what I thought them [scum], and the fate I wished would befall them soon, and their employers, in no uncertain terms!

When it got really bad, before we got call blocker, we just used to unplug the phone if we wanted an uninterrupted evening. There was always the nagging worry that there might be some emergency, but as both sets of parents died some time ago, there was unlikely to be anything requiring an immediate response.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
