Could it just be the usual story of old-ish blokes complaining about 'kids today', like they always have?

Because their parents didn't bring them up the same way they were brought up. They listened to all the fads and the idiocy. I know people with children of similar ages at the moment, some get brought up old school, some modern and trendy. There's a big difference - the modern children are needy and badly behaved. The old school ones are more independent and are well behaved, it's like they are 3 or 4 years older.

I think my upbringing was pretty 'old school', that is to say that apart from the major stuff I was left to bring myself up, and this suited me fine.

Getting myself up in the morning, dressing myself and making my own breakfast, and getting myself off to school. And no lifts! Taught me to be independent, and I've grown up to be pretty normal I think. Apart from the squint and the short term memory loss. Also I used to make my own breakfast and get myself off to school. Did I mention that already?
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

T/T: Inspire Monarch, X200 tonearm, Ortofon Quintet Blue. Phono: Project Tube Box CD: Marantz CD6006 (UK Edition); Amp: Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated.
Speakers: Zu Omen Def, REL T9i subwoofer. Cables: Atlas Equator interconnects, Atlas Hyper 3.0 speaker cables

    T'other system:
Echo Dot, Amptastic Mini One,Arcam A75 integrated, Celestion 5's, BK XLS-200 DF

    A/V:
LG 55" OLED, Panasonic Blu Ray, Sony a/v amp, MA Radius speakers, REL Storm sub

Forget the past, it's gone. And don't worry about the future, it doesn't exist. There is only NOW.

My upbringing was certainly 'old school' and pretty strict

I've turned out ok I reckon... I wouldn't say 'normal' though

The rubbing of an onion held with tongs on the hot BBQ grill to clean it is rubbish - I was disappointed. Non-treated Brillo style BBQ pad with some oil on it anyday.
