Funny, we have a couple of vineyards near us that do some well received sparklers (one of which beat ‘real’ champagne in a Times test!) so I’ve tried a few and have been a bit underwhelmed to be honest.Lol.... Don't you like chicken terrine or venison?
I'm still more of a red wine guy, rather than (any) fizz, but I like GOOD Champagne, and really good Champagne is the vintage variety, which is in a different league from the standard stuff. But you're talking upwards of £50 a bottle... One of our favourites is Pol Roger, and of course Dom Perignon. For pink, we like Veuve Clicquot rosé, or Perrier Louet Blason rosé.
Here's a tip, if you weren't aware of it already... If you like good Champagne, but dislike the price tag, then try some quality English sparkling white wine, produced via the same process. It can't officially be called Champagne, because it hasn't been produced in the Champagne region of France, *but* to all intents and purposes it's Champagne!
And if you go for an example from a small, specialist producer, it could be as good as some of the best French Champagnes, for a fraction of the price. It'll certainly be better than a bog-standard Moet, and likely cheaper, too!

Flavour-wise they weren’t bad, although they lacked the depth of a good Epernay for my liking, but the last two were so fizzy initially that the corks flew out as soon as the cage was loosened (one hitting me right in the eyebrow, which was a little close for comfort!) but, halfway down the first glass, they were virtually flat.
Since then I’ve stuck to the real stuff, and I’m completely with you on Pol Roger - absolutely stunning stuff.
Engineers: fixing problems you didn't know you had in ways you don't understand.

The bracelet on my watch had become loose. The jeweller said probably the sprung-loaded retaining pin had become bent, so it was sent back to the manufacturer for attention.
The manufacturer said they wouldn't do anything without servicing the watch first, and anyway the bracelet was in their words 'beyond repair' and would have to be replaced.
Picked up the watch today (after six weeks away in Kent) - total cost £1,435!

It's shocking how expensive it can be to service/repair a top quality timepiece - when I had the strap replaced on my Omega Seamaster it set me back £20, and the watch only cost 135 Turkish Lira (about £20!)

Yes. It has great sentimental value to me as it was a 21st birthday present from my parents. Last time I had it serviced (about twelve years ago) it cost about £300, if I remember corectly. It is double that now.Was that your (vintage) Rolex?

Although the watch is now 48 years old, to repace it with a new watch would cost somewhere around £6,000, or about four times the cost of the repair. The watch was originally bought for about £50.
Apparently when you send a Rolex to be serviced it is completely dismantled, all parts checked for wear and replaced if necessary, old lubrication rinsed out and re-oiled and a new watch glass fitted. So that goes some way to accounting for the servicing costs. It is the same with Leica cameras; they too are stripped down to their component parts, checked for wear, relubricated and reassembled. The last time I had one of my Leicas serviced, about twenty years ago, it cost me about £240.
But to put this into perspective, a typical car service will cost me £300.
Fortunately running a hi-fi system, or two, costs less.

Nice one. For a watch enthusiast such as yourself, I'd consider the cost as perfectly acceptable, as it makes you appreciate owning a quality timepiece, such as your vintage Rolex. The best things in life rarely come cheap!
