Driving to Preston this morning, the van packed up on the M6 exit slip road, which turned out to be a split fuel line pissing diesel onto the road, all of the engine bay, everywhere but where it was supposed to go. Time was 9.30am.

Called AA, who said the van was in a hazardous location on chevrons which to my eyes looked like a reasonable quasi-hard shoulder, and so they were going to call the police out to arrange moving the van to a safer place.

An hour later a Highways Agency SUV arrived, and they informed me that because of its dangerous location, and the fact that it was still on the M6 (just), it should be recovered and taken somewhere safer before the AA will touch it. At a cost of about £300 But... they offered to shove my van a further 40 metres to get it past the 'End of motorway' sign, which they did... Very nice people

So then I had to get it recovered onto an AA-appointed low loader and moved somewhere more AA-friendly. He arrived at 1.30pm. Then I had to wait another 90 minutes for the AA, who to be fair fixed it in 20 minutes.

So apart from a couple of treks across two busy carriageways for a brew at Subway I spent much of 9.30 till 3.30pm out in the pissing rain, and wondering how much I'd get if I sold this crappy van that clearly hates me.

Maybe it is Nature's way of telling you to retire.

Nature has been telling me this for some time, through aching joints and muscles, falling off ladders and a general reluctance to get up in the morning. Looks like Nature has given up dropping hints and is now shouting

I've gone to an average of 2 days a week, I'd assumed Nature would be happy with that.

    Retiring may not help.

Giving up work tends to coincide with age related ailments and aches and pains setting in .

(I still seem to injure myself regularly without having a job, but I am a bit like a bull in a china shop)

its a double edged sword sadly. the more you do at this age the more you will have accidents and further damage arthritis, but to just stop can cause serious issues too.
i'd say give it up for a couple of months and you'll either love it or be desparate to get back in saddle (and away from wife lol).

    im betting on the latter

But inactivity might lead you to be more like china in a bull shop - we're told keeping active helps with muscular strength and bone density Maybe I'll join a gym - what could go wrong there?
