“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Yesh, a nice 'wee phut' does put a smirk on yer chops

However, I wasn't referring to you, but rather the people you mentioned who may need alcohol to cope with their depression in January, because they've spent too much on their credit cards, buying the sort of shite I referred to before.

They need to stop being brainwashed by commercialism and victims of peer pressure, get a grip instead, and focus on the *most* important things [which isn't buying endless electronic gadgetry for their kids, and running up debts they can ill afford], and start living their lives in a less stressful/materialistic, and ultimately more productive way!

Yes it's a sorry state of affairs, all the stress pre-Christmas, all the anxiety and depression post-Christmas. Meanwhile the retailers and the treasury are laughing all the way to the bank.

I could say that Christmas has become too commercial' but I bet my parents said the same, and their parents before them. For me, if you take out the adverts which run from October, the decorations which go up in November, the usual crap TV, all the pissed people, the getting together with people you spent all year avoiding and the little brats who are hopped up on selection box overdose and sulking because they didn't quite get everything they want, I think Christmas is a magical time!

My involvement with Christmas will be pretty minimal.

I shall stock up on anything I'm likely to need a week or two beforehand, that way I'll avoid the loony last minute shopping rush with all the overcrowded supermaket aisles and monster queues at the checkouts.

It is, if you're almost completely divorced from that PISH [I say almost completely, because I still have to suffer the TV adverts], and as practicing Catholics, love celebrating the *true* meaning of Christmas, and using the time to enjoy the company of much-loved friends and family [folks you get on well with], which you may not have during the rest of the year.

So, for us, it *is* a magical time, and the chance to make some nice (also precious) memories together, with which to look back on with fondness in future.

Plus, my wife absolutely ADORES Christmas, putting up the tree and all the decorations, the snow if it comes, and her birthday on the 13th December (plus our wedding anniversary on 22nd - this year will be our 27th), so I get great pleasure from making her happy, and spoiling her because she deserves it

I must admit, I don't get the dry January thing. It's nothing to do with credit cards, it's just that I've invariably had a lovely Christmas and New Year with friends and family, but I'm back to work, the weather is crap and any holidays are still a long way off. I don't mind admitting, I hate January and I have no intention of EVER facing it sober!

Get to February, however, and I have the Tonbridge Audiojumble and the Bristol Hi-Fi SHow to look forward to, plus we usually do a spa weekend in Portugal with friends every year, which is usually sometime from mid February to mid-March, so plenty to look forward to. I cheer up then, as a result!

Lol... I get that. However, I enjoy what work I do, and being at home doing it in comfort, at my own leisure, often whilst listening to some choons, is certainly no hardship.

Having had a great time, like you over Christmas, I actually quite enjoy when things get back to normal - especially when the chaos of the festive period is over, all the daftees are back at work, and once again I can go shopping when it's nice and quiet [10am weekday mornings, I usually find best], where I often get the shops virtually to myself

I certainly don't miss having to mingle with crowds of the 'great unwashed'...

Plus, there's usually some snow to look forward to in January and February, and I love that! I think it's good to derive enjoyment from all the different seasons, rather than dreading any. That's much better for the soul than moping

Ha - well, if you can enjoy it, why not?

Don't think I just 'landed luckily' in this position, or was given it on a plate; I had to work damned hard (and also smart), for YEARS, to enjoy this lifestyle!
