neither of us were loaded and it was down to us to pay for it as no-one else was helping out. Dress was a few hundred and only worn once; still got it actually. I wore my own suit which was newish. Regestary office was opposite church so could have fooled folk with pics but didnt. No photographer. Got pics from folk attending. Meal was good but only for immediate family and close friends. about 15 I think. this was early sept and it was sunny then it snowed then it was wet the sunny again.

Do at night in a pub room with disco. about 100 in and a good evening. we bogged off to the best hotel for a night then rented a car and off to Blackie for the weekend... We both enjoyed it and stayed married til she died without many cross words.... no need for silly money being spent

That's just utterly stupid, we do wonder at the ridiculous sums couples spend on getting hitched.

Our reception cost £250 at a local pub and a good time was had by all. Plus they had Old Speckled Hen on draught

the three course meal was £87.00 per head..then the night time do...she had a whole roast hog...games boothes.. magicians....the place itself was £11000 for the wedding...then the clothes, the cars, her dress, gifts for the bridesmaids, page boys, best man, maid of honour..bottles and bottles of champagne..the photographer was £1200...it was rediculous...i know she's my niece...but she has got her head firmly stuck in her backside....of course...now the husband has buggered off...they've had to sell the £130,000 house they've not long signed up for....which will probably end up in negative equity...bloody fools...

Got wed in 1983 (not Anita), and had similar budget to Grant's - s/hand wedding dress, borrowed suit, cake done by a friend of my mum's (£30), registry office, buffet for about 30, hot pot supper at night do. Hire of room was super-cheap, as was disco. The venue had a gym in the basement, and one of the wedding photos was of me bench pressing 260lbs still in my shirt and tie! Sickener for my uncle (the photographer) who thought he was stronger than me.

Did get slightly pissed that evening, got dragged onto dance floor by my bride, hadn't finished my cig, so hurriedly put it out and stuck it behind my ear (classy!) Two minutes in, someone ran onto the floor to tell me my hair was on fire. Left early, and we were home in time for Cagney & Lacey. Next day drove to Keswick for 2 nights in a B&B.

My sister's wedding had a horse and cart, a chimney sweep (don't know what that was about), and a stupidly expensive and distant honeymoon. Unfortunately they had to come back a week later and it was all downhill from there.

My theory: today's young folk go from having their arses wiped by their parents, to having a celebrity-budget wedding and honeymoon, then come back to discover that clothes don't wash and iron themselves, and that their new love is actually a bigger slob than they are. Then after a month of bickering about who's responsible for turning their new home into a shithole, they throw in the towel.

There will be exceptions, but I can't think of any off the top of me head.

Yup, they've got no staying power whatsoever, and can't cope with the slightest inconvenience/tribulation, often because their parents spoiled them rotten as kids [always got their own way], so when introduced to the real world, rather than the cosseted fantasy one that they had previously inhabited, they simply can't handle it!

We had a lovely honeymoon in Austria, as ours was a winter wedding in December. Del had no idea where we were going, until the silver vintage Bentley I'd booked arrived at the hotel, to take us to the airport. When she saw that, and I told her where we were going, she was as excited as kid on Xmas eve. Magical memories.

And I bet Del thought she'd struck gold when she discovered that her new hubby was a tabard-wearing clean freak who likes to muck in But you need to stop that, you're making the rest of us look bad

Indeed, when Mrs got ill I looked after her. Forsook money, brought up daughter etc. Was tough at times but can look back with pride at decent job.
