I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a proper conversation with someone on a phone (mobile or landline), than typing messages to them on a keyboard, as it's a much more 'real'/human experience. Emails are ok, using a proper computer (PC or laptop), as you've got access to a decent-sized screen and keyboard, but fiddling around with the tiny screens and keypads on mobile phones is in comparison a total ballache, especially when there's a fair amount you want to say...

And the thought of posting on forums, via a bloody smartphone, also fills me with dread... The predictive text function, for starters, and how it fucks up the spelling of words, and the typos it causes, would make me want to smash the bloody thing against a wall!

Like you Marco I continue to use a 1.5G phone for calls and the occasional texts (occasional, because the phone does not have a QWERTY keyboard). It has a built in camera, which I have used only once to show a glazier the type of glass I wanted replaced, but don't know how to download any subsequent photos to my computer.

Like you I find predictive texting exasperating and always have it switched off.

Having said that my partner has a 3G (or it might be a 4G) phone, and I am impressed by the easy access to the internet, Google, eBay, Amazon etc. that these devices can achieve. Google maps is quite useful if you are on foot in an unfamiliar place. And the predictive text function on her phone makes passive suggestions; you have to click on them if that is what you want - very useful if you are texting in a foreign language.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I used to have a nokia for calls and texts for far longer than my younger friends but got my first smart phone 2 years ago , samsung s7 i think. Theres no going back now, having the internet to hand wherever you are is a fantastic tool.

Particularly when you are anywhere out from your usual place. We use google maps as a sat nav for driving, its not perfect but its far better than no sat nav, saved me a good few hours sitting in jams for sure. You fancy going out to dinner ? find recommended restaurants easily rather than take a random punt. Social media too,

i dont sit on facebook all day, i may only look at it 3 times a week but I can see what my friends and family are up to and keep in touch. Whatsapp i use for mates, very useful for organising the odd get together for scattered friends or a regular get together with local friends where we can organise something different like live entertainment events. The cameras are so good its another really useful thing to have at hand, especially with a young daughter who seems to be growing up so quickly.

What about the dirty phone calls?

And if so, is that a plus or a minus?

Indeed Martin, and without any paragraphs which I've now fixed (as the lack of such makes it so difficult to read what's written) - one of my pet hates about posts made on phones!

    Lol.... Just checking!

We rarely get nuisance phone calls, as we took steps to eliminate them, so that's a non-issue. I just prefer having a 'hardwired' landline connection, as I don't trust the reliability of mobile phones. That's just me, though

Heh-heh... You can see my point though - mobiles (and other such devices) encourage you to rush what you're writing, rather than take your time over it properly

    Hope your dinner was nice
