That sounds like good advice Grant, the little shits do know how to hold a grudge. I think it's all pheromone driven. I sprayed the hole at 4am in the hope that they were all still in bed.

There is another nest I think, a couple of metres from the front door, and they'll be on the lookout for the geezer waving a red can. I can't see the nest but there is steady traffic going in and out of a tiny gap in our five foot wide bed of heather. I don't know what to do about that one.

When I was looking on You Tube for pointers on how to do this, it led me to a couple of videos of wasp fighting bee. Truly horrific, upset me all evening. Hopefully my bees will appreciate my efforts.

Every spring I come across very large lone wasps while I'm working. I assume them to be queens and I always end them, my theory being that every dead queen (if that's what it is) is one less nest later.

Why do they have to be destroyed? Are they actually doing any harm to anything?

they can hunt bees which aint good, also steal their food. and they are more likely to sting you. honey bees are nice things generally, and pollinate our food.
queens are only seen out of nest in early spring, when they are nest building, and very late autumn when they are looking for a hibernating space. other wasps just die.

Do they kill Europeans too? Nippon probably wouldn't bother them too much. Napalm would work better.

Yes Martin they do harm some things, namely bees and spiders, which I consider to be friends (I have no human friends). Plus I have a bit of a fear of wasps, not exactly a phobia but probably out of proportion with the actual threat (yes I know that's the definition of phobia).

I'm ok with them at this time of year while they feed off the sugars secreted by their grubs, but when that runs out they have to find other food sources and that's when they become a nuisance. And later, when they're all pissed from eating fermented fallen fruit, there's no reasoning with them.
