This is nonsense and unsupported by the evidence. If you compare the NHS to any other health care system in the world its administrative costs (i.e. costs of management) are meagre. This is true of single payer tax funded systems and even more so for private for profit systems.

Healthcare costs have been rising globally in real terms for decades. There are many reasons for this but the reality is that health is a hugely complex industry, consuming a huge share of scarce national resources and employing vast armies of unskilled, semi-skilled, and highly skilled employees. This requires effective management and highly trained managers. This is not costless, but the NHS spends a smaller percentage of its resources on management than most systems.

Hospital appointment confirmed that cholesterol levels were extremely high. MRI scan didn't show any clot in her leg but hospital suggested that she sees her GP again in order to book a scan (at the same hospital) for her foot.

Am I missing something here ?
On first appearances this does seem daft. However, the model of care we have in the UK NHS places the GP as the first point of contact with the health care system and the gatekeeper to referral and specialist services. In this case it seems that the GP called for an emergency assessment at A&E which established that her condition was not life threatening but that there were underlying health issues needing further investigation. My guess is that the staff and A&E correctly advised the patient to get her GP to arrange for a follow up consultation with the relevant specialists rather than just booking another scan. A&E are there for emergencies and not for routine patient care.

Seems I'm not a natural tourist. I just watched a feature about Venice on BBC news and the crowds of foreigners were terrible. Apparently 'everybody' has to see the Rialto Bridge, not with those crowds I wouldn't. Seems they are introducing a visitor's fee now, just for being there, damn cheek. Tourist attractions are exactly what I avoid. Think I'll stick with a pint in a quiet country pub as my kind way of seeing the world .

Never been to Venice, don't know what the attraction is. Canals and old buildings, we've got that here.

Anyway, I've been to the Venetian casino in Las Vegas, it's basically the same thing but with slot machines and valet parking.

This is the problem with world famous tourist sites. There is a solution: go in the off season. I went to Florence in Tuscany in very late Autumn. The weather was fine, but more importantly, there were relatively few tourists and no queues for the major sites. Took a trip up to Venice on the train on the same trip. Same story.
