The only reason I ever get on a plane is because I work for a living so I haven't got the time to go where I want to go by any form of civilised transport. Every time I swear that I'm never doing it again. I think last time I really meant it.

I dislike flying and everything to do with it. The flights are long and uncomfortable, the food indifferent if not poor, and, until recently, the "in flight entertainment" limited. Flying business class is only a little better. Only the in-flight booze makes the experience just about bearable.

These days the in-flight entertainment is much better with dozens of films to watch and hundreds of 'records' to listen to (despite the crappy little headphones). However this is more than offset by the check-in nausea and the undignified security checks.

Flying out from Douala (in Cameroon) recently, we were subjected to nine security checks between entering the airport and boarding the plane!

Well, I've been driving abroad (going from Glasgow to Italy, through various countries to get there) since the mid 90s, when I was working like a dog building up my business. So working's got little to do with it, mate. If you want to do something, you just do it!

In fact one time, I remember finishing work at 11pm, having been at it since 8am that morning, driving through the night, all the way down to Dover (approx 500 miles), to catch the first ferry over to France, then when arriving at Calais, driving a further 3 hours before stopping at a hotel to stay overnight, all en-route to our family home in Tuscany (we usually spent 3 days getting there, so that the remainder of the journey was leisurely)...

I simply wouldn't have had it any other way, as the journey itself, through all sorts of lovely places in France and Switzerland, then into Italy, being able to stop when you liked at nice hotels or restaurants and buy some lovely food and wine en-route, was a joy, and also part of the holiday itself (we were usually away for 3 or 4 weeks in total)

As an aside, I always wondered why you never got a driving licence... Don't you like driving, or what? As owning a car would've given/would still give you now, so much more freedom. So why no driving licence for the Maccster?

Sure, but there are a lot worse things you could spend your money on.... For me, the freedom of being able to go where YOU want, when YOU want, in total comfort (especially if it's a nice car you're driving) is priceless!
