I loved my wee Suzuki X7 though.
I thought the little X7's were great, I had a T-reg one in red, and though strictly NOT a touring bike I once did an overnight run from Preston to London to go to Earls Court (this was before bike shows went to NEC). Took a while.

But I think if I had the cash for it now I'd still look for an RD400, in white with red speed blocks. And I'd wear Doc Martens, a studded belt and a bomber jacket to complete the look
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

Yeah, massively quick, 120 odd bhp and around 190kg. I really enjoyed this bike after a good few years of riding Ducati's. The FZR was much more forgiving and slightly more 'loose' on the handling. Great memories.

A decent power to weight ratio. A quick (rough) calculation shows that a Vauxhall Astra would have to make 5-600bhp to be on a par. But on a bike all that power goes through a contact patch about the size of a cigarette packet

Oh hell yeah. The number of times though I have had the rear wheel step out on acceleration making the old bum twitch a bit. Goes to show how much grip there is in a motorcycle tyre, talking of which, back in the day I always used Metzeler or Michelin. They were the only ones I used back then that wouldn't follow grooves in the road and throw you around the bloody place. Also of course the braking in comparison to a car. Three drilled and grooved discs for 200kg of weight compared to a car. Love it but I don't think I shall be going back there any time soon.

I loved my wee Suzuki X7 though.
I had a mate who had an RM250 and that used to frighten me so the 400 must be a monster. I had an X7 and it was absolutely brilliant. It went like stink, handled OK but the brakes were very 70's and had fragile electrics. Massive grin factor though.

Suzuki GSX1400 in Cleethorpes Lincolnshire by Shaun Haselden, on Flickr

Suzuki GSX1400 at the seafront in Cleethorpes by Shaun Haselden, on Flickr

Fabulous modified Suzi GSX1400 outside the Hawaiian Eye Cafe on the seafront in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. I started going in here during 1976 when I started riding bikes. The place has barely changed. The whole seafront area of Cleethorpes isn't hugely commercialised but is still based around money of course. This parking spot for bikers is a blessing from how it used to be way back in the 70's.

I started riding a Suzuki 250 when I was only 12 years old! I can’t recall the name, it was before the RM.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
