Watches, like all jewellery are subject to fashion. The trend towards large dial size is one such fashion whim, and has been going on now for a few years. With diver's watches and watches with multiple timing functions, a large dial size makes sense to ease of visibility.

For an 'ordinary watch', one that simply shows the time (and perhaps the date) a smaller dial size is perfectly acceptable and IMO preferable. My Rolex, which does no more than display the time, is 37mm in diameter including the winder crown.

Roy started a watch thread on another forum which wetted my appetite, and only having a cheapie watch thought I'd treat myself. After much browsing the net and then yesterday going into town I've plumped for this one. https://www.bing.com/images/search?q...79&FORM=IQFRBA
    Very happy with my purchase.

    This one?

Very nice - simple and elegant, with just the essentials. I like the blue face.

I'd still rather have an automatic at that sort of money. Two years time you might have to weigh out for a new battery & I'm guessing for a Tissot that won't be the watch man in Debenhams for a tenner. You could argue that autos need servicing periodically but I've not had one done yet (although I have a Panerai that definitely needs regulating). I've still got the Citizen auto I got for my 18th birthday & that's still going strong 42 years later.

If you go to Timpsons for the battery replacement, then there is an option to buy a card allowing unlimited future battery changes. A bit steep up-front (something like £40), but considering a single replacement will be ~ £10, worth it IMO.

I think the 'higher end' quartz watches usually need to be sent away to the manufacturer for the battery to be replaced as it will also need to have the gasket replaced to maintain water resistance? I stand to be corrected as I only have 'cheapo' battery watches & I replace the batteries in them myself.
