Speaking as an extreme case (I change my watch almost daily) you, at the very least (IMHO), need two watches - a sports watch for daytime wear and a dress watch for the evening.

I also regard a watch as part of an outfit so will often tie in the dial colour with the top / shirt I'm wearing ( ).

Yes, but the 'dress watch' I have has a leather strap, so happily lives in the pocket of my dinner jacket, along with the black tie.

Admire your dress sense in matching the colour of the watch dial with that of the top. I do the same with socks - matching the colour with the shirt (unless the shirt is white: never, ever wear white socks unless it's with trainers. If the shirt is white I will match the colour of the tie, or the pullover.)

Ah, so if you were going on a holiday which included a formal black tie evening or evenings (say a cruise where you'd no doubt be at the captain's table ) you'd automatically be taking two watches as your dress one travels with your dj?

I'll admit a lot of it is affectation and might instigate an interesting conversation with a fellow watch aficionado.

I have a friend who has progressively 'de-socialised' to the point he rarely leaves the house. He has sold his car. All his shopping is delivered; and if people didn't call he wouldn't see anyone.

He can just slob around the house wearing whatever he wants.

I will be taking at least 2 watches with me when we go on holiday, as I don’t like to wear my decent watches around the pool
