Potatoes were mine. Mashed with butter and plenty of white pepper. Don't have it so much now. When young I ate a big tin of Heinz beans a day. Lol now I hardly ever eat them.

Mince tatties and beans was what I grew up in. Still love it tbh in winter

I wouldn’t expect anyone (especially someone brought up in a Mediterranean culture) to be as big a pastry fan as me Marco, it’s my Achilles heel.

Having said that, it’s generally the preserve of Winter for me, I need a bit of stodge now and then to get me through the grey misery (especially lunchtime in work). If I could hibernate, I probably would!

Lol - we're the opposite in that respect, as I have no such issues with "grey misery", or winter/Christmas in general, and enjoy every season for what it brings

I get the 'comfort food' thing though, but for me it would be a hearty porcini mushroom risotto, or a rich beef stew with polenta, or perhaps some tiramisu...

Such 'potato love' is also a very Scottish/Irish (and generally British) thing. For me, it's more pasta, rice or polenta. Just different cultures

That's pretty much how I like to play it too, vary the staple. I generally make enough for four (even though most of the time, there is just us two), then I know I've always got something in the freezer if we CBA. :-)

Problem I have with spuds is that I find them a bit too filling to eat along with a main course, which for me usually follows some sort of starter. It's generally more of a British thing that your 'meal' consists of one big plate of food, and that's it. The continental way is generally for smaller amounts of food, over more courses.

Therefore, I was always brought up to start with *something* before a main course (soup, perhaps some cold meats and bread or whatever), so once I've had that and then start on the meat/fish course or whatever, I don't need 'bulking up' with spuds, which seems to be what it's largely about.

That's why I prefer veg (greens, carrots and stuff), as they're lighter, to accompany a meat or fish main course, and only a small amount of potatoes, or otherwise I get too full up!
