Default OK, What's For Tea Today?

Simple pasta dish tonight, Sicilian style, so lots of tomatoes, onions and garlic reduced right down with generous extra virgin olive oil, and a handful of basil, GOOD pinch of salt, and GENEROUS grind of black pepper. Served with tagliatelle or rigatoni, haven’t decided yet.

Well, it was last night’s meal really. Youngest son came over and likes Mexican so I did a chilli with all the works.

8 hour chilli made with Shin and Skirt Beef, using Ancho & Chipotle peppers. Mexican Red Rice. Refried beans done with Pinto beans from scratch. Fresh Guacamole in a Corn Tortilla bowl. Made the bowls using a little set of moulds I got last week on fleabay for a fiver.

A mainly digital setup with a musical amplifier and endearing 1970's speakers. A CD player that hardly ever gets used and a turntable that is good enough to remind my how enjoyable my old vinyl is. Some cables and things.

    Pour Madame:

Tiger prawns in a chilli, lemon and balsamic vinegar dressing to start, followed by oven-baked marinated Sea Bass with a green side salad.

    Pour Monsieur:

Chicken liver paté to start, followed by Lamb Costolette (lamb with a rosemary and red currant dressing) with poached leek parcels.

Washed down with a 2011 Chateau Les Eyquem, Haute Graves, Margeaux.

    Chocolate Mousse for dessert.

Fantastic stuff, Barry! Could you link to the restaurant (is it Italian or simply just European), as the food looks rather good?

Good wine choice, too! No 'e' in Margaux, though..

    Shucks Marco,

After consuming 3/4 of a bottle of wine, you expect correct orthography?

Anyway, it's an unassuming little Italian restaurant in Camden, London, called 'Small and Beautiful'.

I wouldn't recommend them for their pizzas though (they're not freshly made), but other a la carte items are pretty good.

The chocolate mousse was not as good as it used to be - less rich and less firm, and served in a larger dish.

Small and unassuming can be most desirable... In Italy, the best places to eat are often the trattorie, and even osterie, as opposed to the ristorante.

Like you, I'm a big fan of Margaux (and good Médoc), but with your lamb dish, and since you were in an Italian restaurant, I'd have gone for Brunello di Montalcino, at I suspect around a similar price. When in Rome, and all that...

The slightly disappointing mousse may have been down to it having been made by a different chef, or they've cut back on the quality of the ingredients.

    Just had a Google... http://www.smallandbeautiful.co.uk/

I like the sound of the live jazz and blues. Have you been there when live music has been on?

Oh, and having checked out their wine list, I note the presence of Brunello di Montalcino. Next time you're there, try it, as trust me, it will really hit the spot with the lamb or Tournedos Rossini

Beef braise is in the slow cooker on high for 4 hours tonight. Meat is braising steaks cut in half and a beef short rib. Onions, celery. carrot, swede, garlic, butter, stock, red wine Worcestershire sauce, bouquet garni, cornflour to thicken.
