Veg garden is coming on well this year, as is what’s in the greenhouse (peppers, chillies and cucumbers etc).

Off the top of my head there’s, spuds, onions, various beans, sweetcorn, courgettes, tomatoes, lettuce, parsley, chives, asparagus, black currants, strawberry’s and probably some other stuff i’ve forgotten.
Certainly not enough to ever be self sufficient, but enough to be a fun and tasty hobby.

Lol - nice one, there's enough to keep a small restaurant going there! Our veg patch is currently tiny in comparison (as we had a lot of prep work to do first before planting), but growing nicely! Do you use all that though, or does a lot of it go to waste?

Correct me if I'm wrong, Jon, but I thought you lived alone? Or if not, that's the impression you've given, as I've never heard you mention a 'Mrs Jon', or any kids.... Therefore, it's a helluva lot of veg for a solo amigo.....

I can assure you that i’m very single and very happy, nor have i fathered any crotch fruit. Can’t stand the noisy little buggers.
That said i’m godfather to 4 and that’s more than enough for me.
The only thing thats occasionally goes to waste are eggs (and courgettes), and even with a 3 egg omelette every morning and using them in baking i can’t possibly use 5-6 a day.
I’ve got a chest freezer in the outhouse that i use for anything that i don’t eat fresh, bar cucumbers which i pick small and pickle.
That veg garden was there when i moved in, and i wouldn’t have built one so big by choice, but it was easier to keep it than get rid.
This is how it was when i got it..

Ah, alles klar! Lol@ "crotch fruit"

I quite like kids, in small doses, but I'm not 'obsessed' with them, as many are. Having them isn't the be all and end all of one's existence. Cats are better, anyway!

You've defo put a lot of work into that place. In some ways, you remind me of a mate of mine who's got a similar outlook on life. That's a big property though to 'rattle around in' on your own and maintain. Plus, it must be a sizeable mortgage to find every month, with just the one income?

Do you give some of the excess produce to the old boys you were looking after during lockdown?

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

    Agreed, cats are certainly better.
This place is tiny compared to one of my previous 4 bed houses, i actually had a cleaner back then as i was working all the hours i could.
I own both my properties outright, mainly due to buying and selling at the right time (luck more than anything else) and getting a mortgage when i was 18 and overpaying every month with aim of being completely debt free at 40, which very fortunately i now am. I also had a stake in a business, that had to be sold off when the owners divorced, which paid me rather well.
One of the old boys has some eggs and the others seem to exist on cheesy puffs, ice cream and other assorted junk food that i get them.
All have meals on wheels though, so at least they’re not starving.

Nice one, Jon. Well done. I arrived in that happy position 3 years later than you, but of course I have a wife, and together we own three properties outright, including the one we currently live in.

I also invested shrewdly at a young age and overpaid on the mortgages we had, in order to pay them off quicker. Plus we bought the big house we had in Glasgow before moving down to Wales just at the right time, for a much lower than market price, and later sold it at the right time when property prices were at their highest, so made a killing on that, which consequently allowed us to buy the lodge we live in now (albeit at an attractive price, as it used to belong to Del's mum).

Del's mum kept the money we gave her in a savings account, and when she died, as Del was an only child, she got that back, and we subsequently used the funds to dabble in the local property market. Land and property still remain as the best assets to have.

Anyway, all good stuff! One thing you appear to lack, however, is a lawn... Or did I miss that?
