“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

My father was stationed in Gibraltar during the war. He was a sheet metal worker in the REME (the Army engineers), and during his stay made a silver chalice/vase for the garrison church. When I visited the church I would have liked to have seen it, but I couldn't and there was no-one around to ask.

Gibraltar is a strange place - quaintly British with red phone boxes, letter boxes, and all the shops there that you see in this country: M&S; W H Smith, as well as traditional English pubs.

We were there on a Sunday, so went to a pub for the traditional Sunday roast, apple pie and custard and a pint or two of London Pride ale.

We had a day out in Gibraltar, with a pub lunch and a clear view across to north Africa. Couldn't decide if I liked the place. Great views from up on the rock, but we were warned those barbary macaques are bad buggers and not to be messed with.

Have they sorted the runway yet? What they had was mental, but there were plans to run the road under the runway iirc.

Forget the past, it's gone. And don't worry about the future, it doesn't exist. There is only NOW.

Sorry to hear that Roy, hope it didn't put too much of a dampener on your holiday.

We crossed into Gibralter from Spain, and the above two photos remind me of my visit.

    Thanks Barry.

It was down to a chest infection and the adverse reaction of my digestive system to the anti biotics I was taking for it (I was frightened to cough).

Was impressed with being able to get back from Heathrow on the Elizabeth line for free on my over sixties oyster

I don't actually know if you can go in them. Saw a TV show about them not that long ago.
