Lightbulb Releasing my inner Tannoy (Eaton Clones )

    Hi Folks

A while ago I managed to get a pair of HPD 295 drivers for a realistic price and have been planning a Tannoy build based on the Eaton for the summer. over the last few month I have been thinking around the design with the help of good advice from Mr RFC, Paul Coupe from whom I obtained some crossovers. Due to space considerations the Eaton are a reasonable size for me and as I do not listen at stupid levels would seem to fit the bill, I already have sub so can add this into the mix if I feel that I need more bass.

So the aim is to build some Eaton size boxes with some slight differences as advised

    • Double thickness tops and bottom on the cabs
    • Double thickness outer baffle (with sub baffle also)
    • Plinth added onto bottom of the cabs to house the xovers (possibly)
    • Braces added inside the cabs to stiffen them up
    • Front ported

So in my list of "stuff" we so far have

    Drivers- check
    xovers- check
    T nuts- check
    Boundless optimism - double check
    Walnut veneer - check
    Maple veneer - check
Dangerous collection of power tools - mega check

Outline plans - check (to be ignored as appropriate)

When finished I aim to veneer the cabs with the maple on the baffle and walnut on the cabinet outsides and leading edges, finish to be decided, probably something oily, maybe sardines.

    A couple of caveats-

    1. I have never listened any Tannoys of any description at all so have no idea what they will sound like.
    2. I 've never built any speakers before or done woodwork since playschool.
    3. This may take a while!
    4. I aim to document this here but progress might be erratic!
    5. No I can't knock the walls down to get a pair of Lockwood's in the living room!
    6. Will have to look at how to put photo's on the forum.

All advice, micky takes and well meaning Tannoy large cabinet snobbery gratefully received!

    Cheers !

    An interesting adventure.
A Well troden path though, so few pitfalls remain.
    DO read this though; http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Tannoy_IIILZ.htm
Don't obsess /go nuts on making the boxes into bank vaults.
The audible differences will be slight to none over simple/stupid single layer 19mm plywood.
Ideally drivers should have their Axis at a listeners' ear level It makes significant difference.
Likely more than a crossover mod.
So plan ahead for location and / or height of boxes.. whichever works best for you.

    Happy Cobbling

    I know you want pics

Speaker test with xovers , low volume to check drivers , sounded ok to me, maybe I'll just skip the cab building ....

Has anyone here tried Tannoy Dual Concentrics in open baffle?

yessss.. once upon a time early 90's.... with Sketchy results TBH.
Didn't follow it up as result.
However.. this Man has claimed success.

Read it and try to follow all of his links re this exercise.
    Interesting reading at least.
    Possibly even something to consider
