"NOS" Pioneer SX-330 Receiver. 1971 unused. but theres a catch.. read on.
The catch? Bad news first.... It's a Japanese home market model (actually a E-100DX but same as UK SX-330 other than....) so you will need a step down transformer or variac to give 100V (yes 100V). Being a Japan market model the FM coverage is different from ours also. 76 - 90 MHz but will go up to about 91 so Radio 2 is no problem but you'll only get one or two more stations before you run out of dial! Oh and it's a mighty 6WPC!
The good bit... To the best of my knowledge this was unused until I slowly powered it up on a variac last night! God only knows how this Japan only model ended up here but the original mains plug has never been touched and didn't have any marks of having been plugged in (until last night). There are no marks on any of the screws on the rear panel from connecting speakers etc, No marks anywhere in fact! Inspection soon convinces that it is unused and basically NOS, as the mate who gave me it about 20 years ago reckoned. A possible clue is that when I opened it up to see if it can be wired for UK mains (it can't) I found the bulbholder for the light behind the signal meter to be broken and dangling inside. They use a dab of white paint at the factory to stop the bulb unscrewing and this white paint was sticking the detached bulb holder to a wire inside, and so the holder must have broken in the factory whilst the paint was wet! Did it fail Q.C due to this maybe? (in spite of a QC sticker on the back). I repaired the bulb holder. I tried it on Radio 2 and was frankly amazed at how good it sounds! And this from their budget model at the time. Dial lights up blue when on.
