Anybody else think that list of titles seems a strange mix.

Pink Moon is one of the finest records ever made IMHO but Nick Drake was never very popular back in the day and to be honest I would have thought that he was not on the radar of most people except a few aging hippies like me and maybe a few "audiophiles" who heard him during their "tune dem".

I can understand Bowie being on the list particularly with his recent death and the media coverage but if the intention is to appeal to the mass market to bring vinyl back into the public eye then Nick Drake is not an artist I would have chosen to spearhead that campaign.

Probably did their homework and picked records that record buyers would buy. A lot of aging hippies getting back into vinyl or already in it. Its one I would buy myself.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Original presses of Nick Drake albums sell for big money on eBay. Probably due to a combination of the the scarcity of the albums themselves and his music finding a new audience. As Grant suggests the buyers in Sainsbury's have done their homework.

Nick Drake's music is quite often used in the background of documentaries, and is cited as an influence by many contemporary artists. I suspect its audience goes way beyond ageing hippies and audiophiles.

I wouldn't buy any of these records from any of the big supermarkets, but only from independent sellers. Supermarkets don't need the money smaller specialist retailers do, and our support.

I did not realise that vinyl sales were the preserve of the independents only and if so why are there not any near to where I live? I probably would support a specialist over one of the major supermarket chains in there was a shop local to me and the prices were not vastly different but and after a number of issues with poor quality pressings and poor customer service I will not never buy mail order any more so if it has to be Sainsburys and they give good service then so be it.

Certainly poor service does not beget further patronage but I would not buy from a trend jumping on supermarket ever over a specialist music retailer. And by the way a bad experience with a few online music retailers - or one - does not in my view equate to them all being bad, flawed, shallow thinking that in my view. My closest specialist is 10 miles away, and a trip by train (I don't own a car) to get there, I make the journey and buy music there for the most part, but odd ball rare collectibles I will buy from market place sellers on Amazon (not Amazon themselves) and off Ebay and specialists where I find them selling what I want.

It was the big boys originally jumping on the CD band wagon that damaged specialist music sellers, next it was news agent then the book seller - decimating the high street. Supermakets have sucked the marrow out of specialist sellers, grocers, butchers and the like and put many out of business. That's probably why you don't have a specialist seller near you, my bet there once was one - maybe quiet awhile ago. The small town I lived most of my life in had a specialist music shop - a cinema too once - but changes in buying trends, big boys muscling out smaller specialists killed it.

I am not a big fan of buying anything but basics from supermarkets, meat, veg etc better bought from independents that give a damn about quality. But as in all things you pays your money and makes your choice.
    Regards Neil

Whilst the supermarkets have had an impact on the high street, places like Woolworths always sold records. OK they were not a supermarket but the impact was just the same. The final nail in the coffin of the high street has been the internet and it could be argued that patronage of online retailers be they specialist of multiples is eroding that central hub of our communities, the high street. Extortionate rates and rents don't help either.

Decent high streets are few and far between nowadays and you have to look in places like Deal which is full of independents and is fortunate to have a small music store http://www.smugglersrecords.com Unfortunately though places like Deal are few and far between

I says something for the state of our high streets that a small town on the east cost of Kent is recognised in the national press http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle...eet-award.html

Yes there may be many good online vinyl retailers out there but in the absence of a local vinyl retailer I'd rather buy from a local supermarket than repeat my online experience.
