When driving into Preston the other day, up ahead I could see a motorbike approaching the road I was on from a side road. His approach speed and body language told me he was unlikely to stop, so I took my foot off the pedal and covered my brakes. Sure enough he came out of the side road and straight across my path. I was able to brake without any drama, although I could see from seeing the startled look in his eyes that he was wondering where that big yellow (ex AA) van had appeared from.
My point is that although I may not have the reaction times of a 20 year old, I think that the ability to 'read the road' and anticipate problems before they occur, which only comes from experience more than make up for it.

I think the road users most likely to 'read the road' best are actually motorcyclists. Having ridden most of my life, I've found it a necessary matter of survival!

Yeah, it’s weird when that happens. Sometimes you just know by the speed and positioning of another vehicle that they are about to do some thing stupid, but there is nothing overtly obvious that they will.
