Ready Steady Go was the best thing (musically) that was happening on TV at that time - TOTP was pretty much pants from the outset but RSG was just mind blowing. It was also pretty much the first and, for a time, only TV programme to feature a lot of black soul and R&B artists rather than just covers performed by white groups or singers. Cathy McGowan was great not just because she looked good (believe me - she did) but also she had a naturalness that was pretty rare in those days and seems to be generally enjoying what she was doing and the music she was introducing. In many ways it broke the mold and really felt like it was the shake up British TV needed to drag it out of the Fifties and into the new era.Originally Posted by Marco

TV in South Wales in the late 50's - turn the set on 10 min before watching for it to warm up, using both hands turn the big clunky knob on the side to select channel (only 2 available), bang top to stop picture rolling up, slap side to prevent sideways travel of image, imagine all programmes to be filmed in a snow blizzard with frequent lightning flashes due to poor signal in valley and incessant wind and drizzle, every few months revert to radio while burnt out valve is replaced.
Worth it though- Popeye the Sailor Man, Huckleberry Hound, Corky the Circus Boy, The Lone Ranger and Muffin the Mule!
