Speakers are a different kettle of moaning, no interest in sound quality, fish however. Especially electrostatics . . . They need their own houses. A solution which I've been offered but I've been assured it would just be me and them. Hmmmm . . .

I can understand the distinction between "subtle black boxes with knobs on them" (of which I have many) and "... giant transformers with hot breakable tubes" (of which I have only one example) - but when it comes to electrostatic speakers, I'm afraid it's very much a case of "love me love my hi-fi".

A couple of weeks in now with this Black Tulip amplifier, seems to be a solid performer. I came across some speaker cables in a kitchen cupboard, same Maplins cable with the transparent sheath but this (from memory) is 125 strand as opposed to the 55 strand one I lashed up with. I stripped all the ends back to fresh wire and got good connections I think. It just about fit into the sockets on the amp.

So now, I think I hear a bit more 'body' to the sound than with the thinner cable, but at the same time I think I lost some of that 'midrange delicacy' that impressed we about this amp to begin with. A slight 'thickening' of the sound. It's such a slight thing that I'm by no means certain it is 'real'. I will have to swap back again to the thin wire I think, and see what I reckon then.

But I got to thinking, if it is true that most amp designers will 'voice' an amplifier at least to a small extent, and back in the day this amp was designed (late 70s) they were using pretty thin gauge wire during that process, would that not affect the voicing of the amp i.e it is voiced to sound at its best with thinner cable? Any opinions?

The speakers can but when the amp was made bi-wiring wasn't even a twinkle in the dealers' eyes. There are A and B speaker sockets on it but I'm always wary of using them both at once on any amp that has them.

Should be fine as long as the speakers aren't really odd ohmage.
Was just to try after switching back to put the thick stuff on the bass, and see if the best of both appear

If the speakers can be bi-wired, then all you need to do is to connect both speaker cables together at the amplifier's terminals. The amplifier only needs to have a single set of terminals per channel.

Except that the sockets for the speaker cables are just a little wider than a cocktail stick. I can just about fit the 125 strand stuff into them. It might be doable. I was wondering what sort of cable they would have been using at Phillips back in '79? That's almost a decade before I got ensnared in this.
