Thanks Alan, I've also been watching these two.

How supportable are they considering their age? Especially heads, circuitry and other potential long term consumables / perishables?

Likewise the Akai GX-635 family and Sony TC-765 which I'm also watching? Oh yes, and the Revox B77 II.............

The x2000 were one of the last models made so they are normally in good knick and reliable
Rubber belts and a pinch roller is the normal consumable
    Plenty here http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fr...X2000&_sacat=0
Of course with all R2R you never know how much use they have had and even the occasional dried up cap can stop them working but generally I find R2Rs reliable and well made

I really rate the Tascam BR20 if you can find a good one of them

All Revox machines now will require a full recap if it hasn’t already been done, I know I will get flack for that statement but IMO its true and is re-iterated day after day on Tapeheads.net

I like the Akai GX 635 but don’t own one, they sound nice only warning I see is they have a problem now with failing transistors

I really don’t have any knowledge about Sony machines sorry ask on tapeheads forum as they are popular there

    Thanks Alan, that's really useful.

I think I'd read somewhere else that earlier Akai's suffered from a poor batch of transistors and were prone to premature failure. I'm drawn to one due to the direct drive aspect, but as you say replace the belts and pinch roller on other decks and you might be in with a fighting chance. I'll put the BR20 higher up the list now and take a look at tapeheads.

Having been looking for about a year I'm in no mad panic rush and am prepared to wait for the right deck, but a couple of times I've only woken up to the fact that yes, that would have been good, after it's been sold. And the prices aren't exactly standing still!

I think with these, more than anything, you have to judge the seller as much as the tape player. An expensive door stop I do not need.

If I was only looking for one machine and want a top quality sound I would put the BR20 top of my list as they are a semi pro machine and have XLRs in & out which I prefer.
The BR20 was probably the last production decks made up to the 90s
Here is a video of some of the functions of one of my BR20s

Great demo Alan thanks. Sums it all up in just a few minutes and sounded superb, even over the wire.

Having seen what one of the X2000R's went for last night I need to go and have a lie down and re-calibrate my expectations.

£1550 and with a less than convincing description "The previous owner told me it works but I can't confirm this".

mmmm....... I hope this was just a temporary aberation. We shall see.

TBH the X2000 usually do go for silly money and they are only a domestic machine, you can pick up a BR 20 for arround 400-500 and they are a better machine IMO
