I believe that it's regarded as somewhat of a British delicacy, although perhaps more of a northern one, on a par with the 'chip butty'. Never been a fan of such stodgy foods, but hey, whatever you're into.

From our days spent in Yorkshire as poor students we'd share a portion of fish, chips and curry sauce between several bread rolls to feed the multitude. The Yorkshire Indian butty we called it.
