    Leonard Cohen - 'Beautiful Losers'

Read it about fifty years ago. Then it was a difficult read, so I though I would give it another 'go'.

The above is very heavy going, despite short chapters.

So I'm alternating it with something much, much lighter:

    Richard Adams - 'Watership Down'

Yes, it might be regarded as solely as a book for children, but the themes are not childish at all. Read it when it first came out (1972); but managed to find a nice hardback folio edition with a slipcase today, which will look nice on the bookshelves.

Just started reading 'Passage of Arms', a thriller by Eric Ambler. I'm only a few chapters in, but it's shaping up well.

And I'm reading 'Echoes in The Darkness' by Joseph Wambaugh. A twisty and tricky almost documentary style tale based on a true murder.

    Wambaugh is a great writer!

Just finished another Kurt Vonnegut book. 'Deadeye Dick' this time and I really enjoyed it. A bit strange as usual, but very engaging!

I'm a big fan of McCall Smith's "The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series. Not so much detective novels, more a gentle psychological and incisive look at the nature of the human condition. And being set in Botswana, they provides an interesting and humorous slant.

More pulp . I'm halfway through 'Clandestine' by James Ellroy. Not read him before that I recall, seems to fall somewhere between Chandler and Leonard in style and it's very good (must get more of his).

Ellroy wrote the outstanding 'L. A. Confidential' by the way.
