As usual, I have several books on the go at the moment:
The Memoirs of Charles Greville (Vol. 2; the London Library's copy of Vol 1 seems to have gone astray). Greville was a senior civil servant from the 183s to the 1860s, and knew all the major politicians of the day. In the present Volume, the Great Reform Bill is on its way through Parliament, William IV has just succeeded George IV, and a cholera epidemic is sweeping through Europe.
London Overground, by Iain Sinclair. Sinclair walks the route of the 'Ginger Line' which is an overground rail line which goes around That London.
Just finished: The Old Ways by Robert Macfarlane. Macfarlane travels old routes in Britain and beyond. He's an excellent writer, whom I've only just discovered.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".
“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”
"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”
“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Sir Thomas Urquhart of blessed memory: irrefragable Royalist, man of letters, proposer of a Universal Language, and the exalter of The Admirable Crichton. What edition of The Jewel did you read, Joe? i have my eye on a Scottish Academic Press edition but it is a bit pricey given these lean times. Some claimed that died in during a fit of laughter on the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
Just finished reading 'Lucky You' by Carl Hiaasen. What a treat, this is properly entertaining fun! His style seems to fall somewhere between Tom Sharpe and Elmore Leonard, but is of course like neither .
