Never read any Kurt Vonnegut, so I've ordered 'Mother night' in paperback. It sounds fascinating! We shall see .

I read 'Slaughterhouse Five' many years ago. It was a sort of hybrid sci-fi/WW II novel. Can't remember too much about it, save to say I ought try to read some more of his writing.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Following a recommendation, I started reading 'Badlands' by C J Box last night. Only read about thirty pages so far, but the story seems to be coming together well. First time I've read this writer.

I'm about a third of the way through reading this and really enjoying it. It's wry, with a mischievously subversive undercurrent, very entertaining in a bleak sort of way. Just my sort of thing!

Reading 'The Body In The Marsh' by Nick Louth at the moment. I'm about 3/4 of the way through it and not greatly impressed. It started off OK, but unfortunately, the writer thinks he's slick and clever, yet ends up predictable and also implausible. The string of 'surprise' coincidences littering this tale are killing it and I can sense the 'clever' ending approaching! A 3/10 rating I'd say. I won't be looking for more of his books!

This is fun! I'm halfway through another Kurt Vonnegut book, 'Breakfast of Champions' this time. Simply written, but not childish and very astute. There are some great observations.

Last night I started reading 'Mucho Mojo' by Joe R Lansdale. It seems his usual slightly comic adventure/misadventure kind of tale.

I enjoy his books, not got too far into this one yet.

Last night I started reading 'The High Window' by Raymond Chandler. Not got far yet, but it's shaping up well. I love Chandler's writing.
