Indeed, and remind me of which type of technology was around at the time when the original album was produced (1959)?

Pinky, talented engineers aside (and that's undoubtedly very significant) I think you'll find that another contributory factor towards the kind of sound you've described, the good bits (nicely done, btw), comes from the judicious employing of 'glowing bottles', used in the studio's (very high-quality) microphones and mixing desks, where said Miles Davis recording was made.

Anyway, I've seen the adverts on TV, and am absolutely delighted that vinyl records are receiving such promotion on prime-time television. It's yet more definitive proof that its current resurgence in popularity is far from being a 'flash in the pan'!

The point I was trying to get across was that apart from being a yoof novelty at the moment I reckon most of the yoofs buying it are playing it on something with the SQ of a ghetto blaster.... and then giving it "listen to that vinyl warmth dude, yeah loads of clicks and pops keep it real".

I hope it's not a flash in the pan and sure it will draw in a few to the depravity of hi fi and its upgrade-itus but I reckon for many a novelty it is.

I reckon a lot of the current interest in record playing is just a fashion fad for many and will become 'old hat' before too long and the vinyl bubble will burst, leaving the interest to the more serious enthusiasts.

Trouble is, when that happens we may see a repeat of the recession of vinyl availability and increasing exclusivity of new turntables and arms. Much as was experienced in the eighties.

See how things are in a couple of years!
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Indeed, because what you have to remember (or indeed hope), and something that I think Jez is missing, is that the MORE youngsters who are exposed to vinyl records, and play them now on whatever they play them on (that bit isn't really important), the MORE chance there is of the discerning ones moving onto using better playback gear in future!

I can say as a matter of fact (as I've talked to a few, some of whom are relatives), that not all teenagers who are into music, don't care and/or are unable to tell a good sound from a bad one; SOME actually *do* care about sound quality. One read, for example, of the Steve Hoffman forum, where many youngsters there regularly discuss the ins and outs of 'optimizing their vinyls', confirms that...

Therefore, the more 'mainstream' vinyl becomes, the better chance we've got of 'recruiting' new 'audiophiles' to help keep high-end audio alive!!

The problem is, 'nurturing' them to that point in the correct way, and that would take some careful handling. The last thing you'd want it to send them into your average 'high-end' hi-fi dealership, populated by technophobic dinosaurs, old enough to be their granddads, who are not only completely out of touch with their needs, but (in general) too snooty/arrogant to consider them as 'worthy' customers....

It's going to take a fresh, forward-thinking approach/business to successfully 'capture' the youngsters, who love music, graduating from using their "plastic platters on shite turntables", to something better. I reckon, however, that it would be a great business opportunity for someone who's suitably 'switched on'!

Sorry, Geoff. I completely disagree. I believe that the current popularity of vinyl goes rather deeper than that. See my previous post

You're right though, time will tell!
