    I always connect the shield to the earth at the source end. It sounds better IMO

    I've used MC5000 cable, but only for balanced interconnects.

    I see, and hear, no advantage of so-called semi-balanced cables over coaxial designs. But if you do want to make them, the shield is connected to the outer part of the phono connector at one end only: that of the source.
