    Hi,

I am John from Shropshire. For the first time since Uni (15 years ago) I have a bit if disposable income to spend on updating my hifi. I am stumbling incompetently through this task buying a Used NAIM unitiqute and some massive 1970's Pioneer speakers. I like all sorts of music, my latest purchases being classical, electronica and hip hop. I am just hoping to learn a bit more about it all from the forum and maybe pick up some more bits and bobs.

Welcome aboard John. Plenty of advice here from very knowledgeable members; just put a tread up in the appropriate section. Have a good look round and you will get the feel for what section is for what quickly

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

    Hello John. Welcome to AOS.

If you're making a start on revamping a Hi-Fi system, I'd suggest going to the 'Blank Canvas' section and starting a thread outlining your ideas and requirements. Quoting a budget is a good idea, for individual items or for the entire setup. You could also indicate whether you want new or second hand items or will consider both. We have some pretty knowledgeable members and I'm sure you'll get loads of replies.

    Enjoy the forum,
    Geoff.

Naim Unitiqute is a great idea. I have one for my office and it does everything well. It is the UQ2, I paid £800 as new with an unregistered warranty. It has a pre-out so you can put in a power amp when you get your first mansion. I bought a Quad 909 for that purpose, £630 after a full Quad service and recap.

Try some LS3/5a speakers, Spendor, Stirling Broadcast or Harbeth. I have the latter and in a smaller room the UQ2 has plenty power to drive them, without an additional power amp.

That would cost you £2k to £2.5k, or you could spend £7k and it wouldn't sound a lot better.

p.s. There is an end-point in audio and the sooner you get there the better. If you don't think of changing anything for 6 months you're pretty much cured and you can spend money more wisely on the wife, women generally or both.
