Geoff what are those cabinets? They look very interesting.
Well they're here.
The Tannoy Ascots. I picked them up at 11.00 this morning.
Just wired them up and I thought Oh My Gawd, these sound horrible.
But they don't, it was just that I'd forgotten my Class A power amp like a few minutes to warm up. As the amp is warming they are sounding sweeter by the moment.
I swear that shorter throated compression driver in the ceramic magnet pepperpot Tannoys sounds better than the long throat one in the alnico jobs (yes I know the coil and diaphragm are similar). The imaging, mid and top on these is superb.
And what's this story going around, about horrible colouration with these first series plastic Tannoy cones? I have to say it seems minimal really, There's just a touch of it, similar the the DC1000 really, but less so. I was going to look out for some SRM or HPD295A cones to install, but I reckon treatment with a plastiflex type doping would likely remove most the of the colouration and the effect on sensitivity would be minimal. We shall see.
I reckon these sound better than a pair of similar sized System 1000 Tannoys I had a while back.
(yes, that is my Cheviots behind them)

You've still got that big hill of bubble wrap shoved in the corner.

Just experimenting. This has had a very noticeable effect.
Basically, it's the sticky strips cut off grey 'Post It Notes' and stuck on the cones at angles. Easily removed. It has definitely killed some of the plastic cone signature tonality. This is just to get a measure of what effects can be obtained. I have ideas about peelable rubber paint too.

The plan is to get these drive units sounding the way I want and then building a pair of tapered transmission line cabinets for them. The 12" drivers in my Cheviots are too big for me to build sensible sized TL enclosures for. Hence these 10" drivers. I've got a hankering for some TLs and they have to be Tannoy DC driven.
I can't believe how much difference those little paper cone stickers have made, I expect I could stick them on the reverse side of the cone out of sight and achieve similar effects.
