Only one thing to bear in mind with the 306, the input sensitivity is high, so not every pre-amp will be happy with it. But that can be changed by swapping two very easy to reach resistors for about a quid!
Yes, the 306 is almost competition for my seventeen quid TPA3116 Chinese Class D mini amp!

Just making a passive pre-amp to go with the Quad 306. It will have two switchable inputs and one output. I'm using a 250k log pot, as the Quad has a high input sensitivity, hopefully the volume advance with this will be OK. I've finished cutting out the holes in front & rear panels, now to wire up and assemble.

Bugger, can't find any suitable wire (so far). I'll just use whatever I can find in my workshop for now just to get it working.
