    Never a bad idea…

However, the perceived improvement (if genuine) could just as easily have come from the use of cleaner, newer, sockets, as opposed to anything else. Even small reductions in resistance like that are usually audible in a high-resolution system.

    Absolutely

Would never use switched for hifi

Bigger improvement if you go from switched sockets feeding cheap 4 way adaptors to a bank of unswitched for all kit
My system went from crap to great

It's not in the signal path though...

Have to say I remain sceptical despite the massive amounts of subjective reports that these thing make an improvement. Although I've heard clear differences between mains blocks and that's prior to the signal path too.

Even so when I have my hut re-built (later this year hopefully) I'll be putting in unswitched MK sockets and making some other mods to the mains; because: why not?

Have you got anyone lined up for that job? If not, I could bring my tame (‘hi-fi friendly’ and very cheap) electrician down to sort it out. He’s very good!

Interesting, must consider this when I sort my mains out.

Cheers Marco but it will be part of a full re-wire job and partial re-build. Amongst other things they have to fit a modern consumer unit and run an earth up the front of the building, through the loft and down the other side to the kitchen so that a central heating boiler can be installed. It's all going to be a big job, I will have to move out for a couple of months at least. I will be consulting you on the specific hi-fi side of it though so don't worry

If you want to do it right, and trust me I’ve 'been there and done that’ with the mains, to a degree you wouldn’t believe, fit European (un-fused) Schuko plugs to your mains leads and plug them into a high-quality mains block, fitted with as many Schuko sockets as you need, in order to power your whole system, but which has a mains flex connected to the block, fitted with a normal 13A plug.

Then simply install ONE single unswitched 13A wall socket, and plug the block into that. Trust me, that will sound WAY better than almost any other arrangement (for many genuine electrical reasons), as well as ensure that your kit is adequately protected.

Hi James, I'm good, how are you?

I'm not entirely sure at the moment but the unswitched sockets will be a definite. I've also read that the fuse in the consumer unit can be uprated, too, and that this can improve things.

Don't get me wrong I am sceptical but since I need to have the work done anyway might as well not take the chance of spoiling the ship for a ha'peth of tar.

Plus a bank of 8 unswitched sockets will look pretty sexy and 'serious'

Ok, no worries. If you need me, you know where I am. I don’t even mind popping down and giving you a hand with any lugging required and/or applying the ‘finishing touches’, to optimise things in a hi-fi sense!
