We have my wife's elder brother and sister here for a week, so we have started lighting the fires in the kitchen and the front room. With the doors open, the whole house keeps comfortable. Although we don't actually need them yet, there is no doubt that it makes the place cheerful and cozy.

The big decision will be when they go home. Do we keep the fires on or wait until it gets really cold? Its only around 13/15 degrees during the day at present. Usually, we just put another jumper on or start with the thermals before burning wood.

Maybe we'll just switch the blankets on at night.

I have finally put the heating on. I got fed up with the earache from the Mrs.
Being in France, she has bought me some Oscillococcinum (a homeopathic remedy) which I need to take once a week as a prevention.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Homeopathy is complete rubbish. It's based on nonsense principles.

    Hi Gordon,

For me, that’s as good a reason to light a fire, as it is for keeping the room warm. I can’t stand drab, stark houses that look (and feel) uninviting and depressing - and that’s what happens when there’s no heating on inside rooms during winter.

For me, rooms must be cosy and relaxing, and nothing is cosier than sitting in a room, lit only by the glow of a log fire (listening to the gentle cracking of the logs), and enjoying the natural, healthy heat it gives, as opposed to the stuffy/oppressive, headache-inducing one generated by central heating systems and/or gas or electric fires.

Consequently, we light the fire now every day from 3pm onwards (it’s warm enough here before then without it), and cold, dark winter nights become wonderful!

The big decision will be when they go home. Do we keep the fires on or wait until it gets really cold? Its only around 13/15 degrees during the day at present. Usually, we just put another jumper on or start with the thermals before burning wood.
My view? Stop being such a tight arse and get the fires lit!

Seriously though, I hate being ‘mummified’ by thick clothing. I’d far rather the room was nice and toasty, from the heat of a coal or log fire, and go around in t-shirt and shorts, than sitting in cold room wrapped up in layers of clothing

Maybe we'll just switch the blankets on at night.
We’ve been doing that for the last 4 weeks! Hate climbing into a cold bed…..

    Marco.

I've now put my heating on so the house is nice and cosy, which means I can walk around with short skirt and t-shirt on... I hate wearing a lot of clothes especially when in the house....
