“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Saw 'Mr Turner' yesterday - a biopic about the artist J M W Turner, starring Timithy Spall as Turner and directed by the inestimable Mike Leigh.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._M._W._Turner

Spall is brilliant as the laconic Turner (in fact most of Spall's dialogue consists merely of grunts), a genius of a painter who is so obsessed and focussed with his work and the subject matter of his paintings, his social graces leave much to be desired. I found the film hard going because of this: especially the portrayal of Turner's selfish, exploitative relationship with his put-upon houskeeper and his detachement from, and disinterest in, his wife and children.

To say the film comes across as somewhat dreary would be misleading, as Leigh has captured life in Victorian England well; and unless you were extremely wealthy, life then was drab. The filmic reconstruction of the some of the subject matter Turner painted is fabulous: Leigh must have used a good location scout. The towing away of the "Fighting Temere" (one of Turner's most famous paintings) by a steam tug set against a dramatic sky is superb (and doesn't seem to have used CGI)!

So if you are an admirer of Turner's work - I recommend you see this film.

Been to see 4 films in the last couple of weeks. Mortdecai, Ex Machina, Shaun the Sheep and Jupiter Ascending. In first place - Shaun the Sheep! Well, Ex Machina was pretty good too, but don't bother with the other two.

    Arrival (11/11/2016)

Full trailer just revealed. This film, at least for me, has come out of nowhere and I know the conspiracy therorist are touting it as the film to prepare the world for a real out in the open first contact

Anyway regardless of that this looks like an intelligent, thoughtful film - proof in the pudding is the eating so we will see.

    Regards Neil

That's what they said about Close Encounters but the aliens don't seem to be in any rush to land on the White House lawn.

Don't worry. As long as they are not probing you too much it should be fine.
