Just seen a Art Audio Diavolo in unusual black finish sell for £1285, one massive bargain for someone.

Went and had a look at them, all look original but pretty tatty covers and cabs. Spoke to the guy who’d tested them but hard to ascertain if all the drivers are working as his criteria was ‘music came out of them’. What’s the going rate for a pair of these in fairly unknown condition, £100-125?

Unless the cabs are actually broken in a substantial way they probably will come up nicely with a bit of TLC. The grill cloth of course can be renewed easily. Without testing each driver individually one can't be 100% certain each are ok but given that 'music came out of them' that is a reasonable good sign. I personally would take a chance up to say £75 given that 'good' condition early concertos go for anything between £100 to £250 (so far as I can see). This allows for not a big loss if drivers are broken and a recap if drivers are fine. Possible upside is that all drivers working just great, no recap is needed and all that is needed is TLC on the cabs and new cloth. Even then the existing cloth could well be cleaned up and re-stretched.

Of course 'plan b' in the event things are mostly rubbish is to sell any working drivers and other bits individually. This may well raise more than the cost of winning the auction - but of course hassle doing several sales.

Did the guy you spoke with say you could buy them there and then?

You're probably around the right value. A mint set of late ones would be worth £200 to £300.

The Concerto is one of the classic bargains, they competed with big Tannoys and Ditton 66's at the time and were in no way inferior, just different. The bass quality is excellent and the mid/top is similar to the LS3/5a monitor. Grab 'em now, it won't be long before the prices go silly!

The grille cloths look the way they do because the Declon foam backing/padding has long since fallen apart allowing them to sag. Just wash the fabric, stretch it back into shape and staple into place with new padding and it's sorted. The woodwork is easy to re-polish.

Wouldn't let me buy them, got to wait for the ebay auction to finish. There was a little pile of black dust on the bottom lip of the cabinets, I'm guessing that's the backing of the fabric which has disintegrated? The drivers all looked in ok condition and the screws holding them in weren't in any way damaged so I suspect they are the original drivers. Might be worth a punt I'll wait and see how the price goes. Never heard Concertos so would love to have a listen to these.

    Yes, that's what it is.

The speakers look basically OK, so I'd say they're worth a bid up to maybe £150. Bear in mind that the popular larger three way Brit speakers of the time were the Goodmans Magnum K2 and the Wharfedale Dovedale III, which now fetch £100 to £200 and were nowhere near as good as the KEFs.
