I've got to recommend this recording on DG's superlative 4D CD as one of the stand-out classical recordings I've heard to date for mastering and performance, not to mention the music!



I particularly enjoyed the Habanera (Andantino) and Ouverture de Gwendoline (Allegro con fouco) sections of the piece. Quite outstanding, full, musical and entertaining.

For anyone who hasn't yet heard this 1996 recording, do yourselves a favour and buy it!

I have the Mercury Paul Paray/Detroit Chabrier (on CD) which is kind of special in its very Mercury kinda way. Super Audio or vinyl would be nice to try - but I think I'll check this one.out for a spin if it's on Spotify.

Another perhaps unexpected John Eliot Gardiner triumph is his recording of The Merry Widow with Cheryl Studer and Barbara Bonney. A rollicking 70-odd minutes of fun, and a nice (and viable) alternative to either of the Elisabeth Schwarzkopf versions - and in spectacular sound.

Thanks for the tip Malcolm...I must search that one out. I'm not a huge Elizabeth Schwarzkopf fan to be honest (I know, I know...go and wash my mouth out )

I get that on Schwarzkopf - an acquired taste true. Hope you enjoy the Widow.
