Vinyl Storage/Transport

I'm in the market for a means of transporting and a storing large quantity of 12" vinyl & need a cheap solution. I used to have an odd assortment of plastic boxes that did the job just fine but they seem to have become damaged or lost - I wouldn't have had enough to do the job anyway.

I'm going to be moving my family for a while into a rented place nearer to where I'm currently working and we'll be taking the system & music with us. So I need something to put records in, not just for the move, but also, possibly as a means of storage for the duration of our stay there - I don't expect to be able to put up suitable shelving in a rented place.

All of the plastic boxes I see on the market that are not purpose designed have tapered sides, making them completely unsuitable.

Price is a major consideration!

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Whilst not particularly elegant, plastic milk crates with the bottle dividing part removed, are possible solution. Your local dairy might be willing to divest themselves of some, either gratis, or for a song.

Another idea is to use one of the collapsable laundry basket/crates. These have the perfect width (12.5") and their length (17.5") allows 120-130 LPs to be stored. I still have some 125 LPs stored in this way. I don't think they are too expensive.

How many 'vinyls' do you need to move? I only recall you saying how many metres of vinyl you have, not numbers...

I suspect that might need a few too many of these...

Hi guys,

Thanks for the suggestions.
My Googling muscles are worn out looking for solutions to this problem!

We're looking at about 8 metres worth. My wife favours the plastic box with a lid but I'm looking more for something that can be used in a living room after the move.

If I see one more ad for a bloody iCube at £30 a pop, I'm going to kill someone!

The best I've come up with so far is an 90 - 100 record capacity MDF cube for a tenner

I reckon we'd need about 20 of either of these - that's why the price has a rather large bearing on the whole thing.

Just one word of warning re the folding laundry basket idea. I actually have one of these very crates, and while it will be fine for static storage, I would advise against using them to move stuff around in.

Vinyl is bloody heavy as we all know, and these crates just aren't strong enough to be picked up and carried with the weight of a bunch of LPs in them.

I did think of this, it seemed quite attractive if I can get the board from someone who'll cut it for me. I did a few sketches to work out how many I could get out of a sheet & I don't think I could get more than 5 the same size & there would be quite a lot of unusable offcuts. Trouble is, I think the time I'd spend building them is more valuable than the £10 saving that this option would make over the ones I found on t'internet.

The search continues.........for a little while, anyway. Watch this space if you're interested.
