Copland 288, 822 if you can find one still working.

    Cambridge 840C

Rega Jupiter/IO, Saturn (with Couple style interconnect)

The above, especially the Cambridge and Rega models, should be easy to service for some years yet. Not sure on the TEC mech in the Copland..

Alternatively, a StanDAC Bushmaster II with a player/transport of your choice..

Pioneer PD10K SACD player from Amazon for less than two hundred quid and bloody marvellous as I have one. In fact it is so much better than my four hundred quid Original 2008F HDCD player even connected to a Caiman DAC.

The plan was maybe get a decnet stand alone cd player preferrable with a decent transport and then use the StanDAC Bushmaster II and battery power supply.

A decent CD transport would suffice then dude, plenty of Teac VRDS1's on ebay, I bought myself one a few months ago to use with my Longdog DAC.

Pioneer PD 50 SACD/CD player, 450 or so. Excellent value for money. I have one and it's really good.

    How about this? http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/...products/erc-3
I have their Stealth DC-1 Dac. I much prefer it to an AudioLab M Dac I used to own.

Slightly over budget but this is superb

I have one and at a recent demo it went head to toe against the latest Benchmark Dac2 and there was hardly anything between them(apart from price)
Cd playback is excellent and it will also play the latest blu-ray audio discs Becks Sea Change is stunning in that format.
    Andy.
