Default Interesting (or just plain weird) Valves

So, what valves have you got, or come across that are not like anything else you've ever seen?

    1538-P1 strobotron.
A very small dome shaped 9-pin valve

    Pics & info here: http://www.tubecollector.org/1538-p1.htm

A couple of years ago I sold 3 of these for a very pleasantly high price to a great gent in the States who had been trying for years to find some spares for his old machine.

They're a very high speed flash device (high speed in the sense that the flash period is very short) used in a 'Strobotac' which is a piece of gear for measuring very high speed motion - (no bowel or toilet jokes please)

After 30 years involvement in electronics research, I have come across and used many unusual 'valves'. These were not the devices that people usually think of as valves, rather they were photomultiplier tubes, microwave magnetrons and klystrons and devices used to measure very low pressure levels (that is, a vacuum). None of these, apart from the photomultipliers, looked like the glass devices that are mystically worshipped by some members.

The web site you quote is very useful and interesting. I occasionaly use it inter alia for information on audio valves.

Many years ago Fane made an ionic tweeter which had an incredible frequency response. Bowers and Wilkins used it in their P2 speaker. There was no arcing involved, so no light show!

For their next loudspeaker B&W replaced the Fane unit with an electrostatic tweeter: the DM70.

Yup, I smelled a pair of those Fanes once!!

.....and I've always thought the DM70's were just great. It's a shame they've been overshadowed by the Quads because they really were special in their own way.

No doubt they would be banned today, what with health and safety and modern EU CE regulations.

The amplifiers shown are single ended designs using Eimac 450TH directly heated transmitter triodes. They produce 160w.

Single ended 160w amps! - better tell Ali (Tait). Downside? - none, apart from costing $55,000 a pair!

Fantastic aren't they? It's a DHT called the 450TH.Don't know much about them, but your probably looking at 100 or more watts single ended!

    EDIT-Found this- http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/f...90/4/450TH.pdf
