Default The BEAT Turntable at LOTUS !

I am extremely excited to announce myself as the UK importer and sole European retailer of Steve Dobbins's incredible Mag-Drive turntable, THE BEAT.

I will spare you the wordy blurb (links down the bottom if you want to read the full story) but suffice to say that this handbuilt device moves the game on from every other deck I have ever owned by no small margin and on balance of properties it is the equal of the top 2 decks I have ever heard both of which are/were at least 3 times the price. I am absolutely delighted to be representing this amazing deck and it took some persauding to get Steve to commit to a small yearly UK supply. Putting on my enthusiasts hat for a second, I am also totally over the moon having the BEAT as my own personal deck to enjoy as well. Let's just say that I don't think I'll be seeing much daylight over the next few weeks !

Read the full story and find out exactly what this turntable brings to the party and what makes it so special: http://www.lotus340r.net/items/beat.htm

Specs and a few quotes down the bottom.

"I was over Mike's house yesterday to listen to "The Beat". I sat in the sweet-spot for about 2 hours and didn't want to move. This is the best definition I have heard from vinyl in his room. The coherency from top to bottom was remarkable. I feel "The Beat" bested the Rockport in everything but soundstage width. Even though the soundstage was wider, I still felt the images that it created were not as well defined as "The Beat". The engineering felt very mature. Steve has done an amazing job with his new creation. It's something I could definitely live with for the rest of my life. Anyone in the Seattle area has GOT to hear this masterpiece! "

"What I like about the Beat is it's simpliciy, incredible timing, great, dynamics and black background, The combination with the H5000 DHT, HA3000, Telos and Puritas stands shoulder to shoulder and very often above my reel to reel recorders ( Studer 812, Studer C37, Nagra T)"

"Yesterday Steve Dobbins drove up from Boise with my new tt, The Beat. Steve mounted a Colobolo arm'ed Reed and my A90 and we listened until midnight. It sounds better than the prototype that i loved in April, and not by a little. Even lower noise floor, and more bass and drive. In 5-6 hours of listening i could not find fault and the music really flowed. It's not right to criticize the Dobbins Technics SP-10 Mk3 'The Beat' replaced, as the Mk3 was really the impetus and departure point for 'The Beat' to begin with. That said, Steve's new tt takes all the great things about the Mk3, and goes to another level (or 2) with everything. There is an ease and refinement to 'The Beat' that makes you relax into the musical flow like the Mk3 never quite could. Fit and finish are top notch everywhere you look."

"As soon as you settle down to listen you immediately notice how quiet The Beat plays. You hear subtle nuances on recordings that you might not have heard before. Regardless of what LP’s I play or what genre of music that I listen to the results are always the same. The Beat portrays music in an amazingly coherent and elegant fashion. Nothing sounds out of place and there are no ragged edges. The Beat always stays in control."
"i've heard the Caliburn a few times. While i consider it possibly the most detailed tt i've heard; ultimately I hear what it does not do (as well) compared to the Rockport and the Beat. Music is timing. Period. The best tt's at keeping the time are the ones I enjoy the most. I still enjoy lots of very good belt drive tt's, just not as much."

"During the Sunday afternoon of Steve Dobbins visit, we were listening to the Who's 'Underture' from Tommy, a 'Simply Vinyl' pressing that is wonderful. Amazing. The bass, and space, and articulation and everything was great. I've played this cut on my other tt's to great enjoyment, but not like this. And then IT happened. One of the bass notes right in the middle of the soundstage literally exploded like a cannot shot. There was a sense of a ring of energy with a hole in the middle. The most physical musical moment of reproduced music i've ever heard. We both were taken aback. What the hell happened ? "

    Thanks guys.

Interestingly, the Garrard is one of Steve's creations as well ... a Dobbins 301 with his custom plinth, platter, bearing etc etc...

Quite like the Vyger Indian as well if we are talking looks !

Looks like genuine quality to me, Richard. Is it available in black?

I ask because I agree with Al that the white is rather 'girly'...

    Yes, white isn't for everyone

Most of my demo Allnic pieces are black so it made sense for me. Steve actually used to be a professional car painter many moons ago and does these by hand so can do any colour you like. Might be nice in a really good metallic or fleck paint.

Marco, the blurb says black and white are the standard finishes.
