Outside of Ian Walker's superb 1995 vintage Canterburys (which use the pepperpot 3889 drivers), I've not heard any modern Tannoys which cut it in the same way. Cabinet design and crossover quality are also hugely influential in terms of one hearing the magic in all its considerable glory

Do you feel the same about the prestige range as well

    Hi Jon,

That's an interesting one. The Canterburys I mentioned above are part of the current Prestige range, but an older design. I believe that the current Prestige models all use the Tulip Wave Guide horn tweeters, which have different sonic characteristics to the 'Pepperpots' - indeed this is what I've heard, albeit so far just with the Kensingtons.

I enjoyed many aspect of those, and they possessed that 'big' Tannoy sound, even with 'only' having 10" drivers, but they had a much more forward 'hi-fi' type of presentation, particularly through the top and midrange frequencies, which is rather different from how Monitor Reds and Golds present music. You could also 'hear' the horn (exhibiting that slight 'quacky' quality) that people go on about, but which is completely absent with the Reds and Golds (and Ian's Canterburys, too) when modern crossovers are used.

Anthony TD, a member of the forum and a friend of mine, owns a pair of Glenairs that I've yet to hear. By all accounts they're very good but somewhat different to my Lockwoods. I don't think Anthony was overly enamoured with them at the beginning, but I believe that they've settled down now and are sounding excellent.

It'll be very interesting hearing what he thinks of the Lockwoods compared to his Glenairs when he visits in the next few weeks

Thanks to all who have contributed to this topic.

Well done, Marco. You have constantly engaged readers and posters with your insights and comments.

It has been a most pleasurable experience reading from the beginning.
I've been a bit of a recluse, Tannoy-wise, starting from scratch in the '60s and never meeting any other Tannophiles. Rural Oz was not a hi-fi heaven in the early days.
Since the Internet, communications have exploded and sources are legion.
It is comforting to know there are so many Tannoy 'obsessionists' out there.

Over the years I've listened to and owned (and built) many brands and types of speakers but I've always come back to Tannoys. I had a hiatus of about two years at one stage - but came back. That's another story.

I haven't ever bothered to follow other loudspeaker follower topics so I find it hard to imagine other, so dedicated, groups of speaker fans with such a rich history and tradition of Tannoys, in the various audio forums around the globe. But there probably are. Maybe I should get out more - instead of listening to Tannoys and occasionally trying out a tweak or two?
    I don't think so!

    Regards,
    John

I heard the Dimension series a couple of times and found them to be totally the opposite of the Prestige models I've heard. The treble almost screams at you and can be very fatiguing if you get the rest of it wrong. Mind you, KEF followed suit with their mid noughties Reference models that could almost take your fillings out in the name of "HiFi." Those tannoy super-duper super-tweeters may help smooth the tweeter a bit, but measurements I've seen indicate that they come in at 8KHz and don't extend much above 28KHz. So much for going out to 60K...........
