Two things with that, though. 300 miles is the maximum theoretically possible, not real world range. You have to accelerate up a hill to pass an HGV, there's 25 miles off your range right away.

it's cold or it's warm so you need the heater/ac on the whole way, another 50 odd miles knocked off.

The other problem is what if your destination is 320 miles away? You still have to stop for half an hour (at least) to re-charge just to go the last 20. And you might have to travel some distance out of your way to find charging point. You get there, they are all in use so you have to wait your turn, there's another hour, maybe more.

most folk say they get 300 plus or minus a little bit .. so fairly accurate but yes in cold state its gonna be lower. in winter you certainly would need a smart charger to warm it and batteries up. the way petrol prices are going its gonna be a rich mans game driving a proper car

petrol prices are artificially high because of the duty, not for any other reason. Tax it the same as electricity and it would be much cheaper.

The analysis by the RAC Foundation – which predates the steep falls in road traffic seen as a consequence of Covid-19 – was based on the MOT data for 516,936 vehicles.

Private cars are required to start having annual MOTs once they are three years old. At that point the mileage is recorded by the test venue and it is that information this research uses.

The results show that new diesel cars cover an average of 12,496 miles in each of their first three years.

This is 67% more than new petrol cars which only do an average of 7,490 miles per year.

Pure battery electric cars are driven an average of 9,435 miles per year. Looking at a selection of individual electric models:

yup but currently it isnt. petrol will get dearer, and im sure they will find a way to charge folk driving lecky cars too. if you fancy a few years cheap driving get a electric car now. 4 or 5 years and the benefits will be gone

money is an issue for lots of folk alas. always has been i guess. and not everyone finds driving as exciting as maybe you or even i do. to some its just a means to an end.

Glad you said "proper" lol, and of course in that respect you're right, but not necessarily with the latter. It would depend on how much driving you did.

It won't cost so much in fuel if said car spends more time parked outside the house, or in the garage, than on the road, such is the case if your car's used simply for pleasure, not work

I'm sure that's true of some but all the wealthy people I know have a vehicle that is more expensive than it needs to be if their only interest was in relaibly getting from A to B.

Not necessarily 'driver's cars' though, I have a friend who could easily afford a Ferrari or something equally exotic but prefers his monster crew-cab pick up truck. No children just him and the Mrs and he has no practical use for a giant pick-up, he just likes it. Don't think the back seats have ever been sat in.

Best thing I ever did car-wise was getting a new small cheap runabout in 2014, it does all I need, goes well too, even on motorways. Sure a bit more wellie would be fun, but I don't need it. It's only done 23k, so bags of life left in it and it costs peanuts to run (comparatively ). I could run something fancier, but with the mileage I do, there's not much point.

I clocked up 660 miles last year due to Covid.
