You've been done. (Last battery I bought was a bog standard for about £68 I think)

Any joking apart what car was it for and what's 'sophisticated' about it?
I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist - he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar - he played music. - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Probably due to 'stop/start' technology, [see link below] which requires a more sophisticated/heavy duty battery (AGM), facilitating the plethora of electronics needing powered in modern cars (I believe Barry has an Audi A1).

The last battery for the Brabster was just shy of £300, but that's for a 3.5L engine, with lots of current-demanding stuff attached to it. This is what's fitted in my car: https://www.varta-automotive.com/en-...er-dynamic-agm which I suspect will be similar to what's in Barry's.

Yes, that's more or less what the AA man said, though I wasn't really taking it all in at the time. My Audi does seem to have a lot of current consuming "bells and whistles" on it which need powering: sat-nav; air-con; heated seats; electric sun roof, plus the usual radio and CD player.

Like yours the new battery is made by Varta, and replaced the original, which would have been 9 years old. I was amused to see the AA engineer had to 'tell' the car (by plugging in some sort of gizmo under the dash), that the battery had been changed.

Canbus. Everything has to be 'keyed' in on modern cars these days. On a newer Merc one can't even change a lightbulb without having to advise the computer. Sheesh.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Exactly this. If your car has all the gizmos that are fitted these days, and especially if it has stop/start technology, AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is the way to go. But they do cost upwards of £250. Older low-tech cars don't really need this, and a regular acid-flooded battery is fine and should come in under £100. But you do get what you pay for - get a good 'un and forget it
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

T/T: Inspire Monarch, X200 tonearm, Ortofon Quintet Blue. Phono: Project Tube Box CD: Marantz CD6006 (UK Edition); Amp: Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated.
Speakers: Zu Omen Def, REL T9i subwoofer. Cables: Atlas Equator interconnects, Atlas Hyper 3.0 speaker cables

    T'other system:
Echo Dot, Amptastic Mini One,Arcam A75 integrated, Celestion 5's, BK XLS-200 DF

    A/V:
LG 55" OLED, Panasonic Blu Ray, Sony a/v amp, MA Radius speakers, REL Storm sub

Forget the past, it's gone. And don't worry about the future, it doesn't exist. There is only NOW.

Yups... Interestingly though, the Brabster is late 2008 and was still fitted with an AGM [that's the battery it came with], thus what I've always replaced. I wonder how much older or 'low-tech' a car would have to be, in order for it to be as you say?

Certainly, cars are much more hi-tech now than they were in 2008..
