There is no reason for the engine to kick in as nothing was draining the aux battery.
If the stereo was blaring music, then the engine would start to get the MG's charging the battery.
As long as you leave it in "park" and not neutral, then you're good to go.

We've been slaves to the tyranny of technology for long enough now. I'm thinking about buying a horse and cart. Just a bit concerned about the effect of horse farts on climate change. Then it's just a case of choosing a colour - I believe piebald is an optional extra.

The horse would have to exist before you bought it though so technically you're not adding anything to climate change. Now if you took up horse breeding that's a different matter.

yes what was on was fairly low current, like the led runners, and the info screens, computer etc. its a new battery again too.. no 5 as it keeps going from ok to 4v without a pause; but only occasionally.. i believe there is an intermittant fault condition... sadly its put me off

That is a very good point, puts my mind at ease. But I also need to investigate how much garden I need to sustain one horse. I don't see the idea catching on in a big way, as so many folk don't have a garden. Unless car parks could be grassed over, that might work
I may have to plan my journeys so I only pass through posh areas - last thing I'd want is to come out of the Spar shop to find some scummy chav has keyed my horse

funny but down in dublin there were a good few folk who had horses grazing on grass outside there flats and homes in some schemes. it wasnt unusual. they were tied on a loose rope etc.. you wouldnt see that in britain.. i am going back a few yearsThat is a very good point, puts my mind at ease. Is there not a park nearby? Or as you are travelling about you could stop every now and then and let it eat a hedge or something. I don't think you should jump into it though. Do some research first by watching old episodes of 'Steptoe And Son.' Should give you an idea about most of the potential pitfalls.

If you're having that many problems with aux batteries draining fast or dying then my money would 100% be on any after market accessories fitted to the car.
I think you've said you have lifting gear fitted?
It's a piece of cake to do a drain test whilst disconnecting various fitted equipment to see what may be causing the problem.
I've seen that sort of problem again and again with after market alarms and trackers etc.
In all the years I was a tech for Toyota/Lexus, I've not seen that problem on a non after market accessory fitted car.
