Yes but remember you and Del etc are not atypical of the great British public mate. Nor am I.
Why it happened? I guess it was price and profit margins, most things come down to those. Then most get used to it this way and prefer it, or think they do at least.
Look at how communities have become closed door individuals instead of open door walk ins for your neighbours as it once was.
So called progression isn't always good and usually has a human price to pay.
99% of neighbours here wouldn't notice if you'd been dead for a month, nor likely care.

Yes its a very good butcher, which has grown in the last few years, Ive not tried any of their wines yet, I normally drink red and happy to try anything, normally would average £10 per bottle but have a birthday coming up so I have an excuse to splash out. The wife only really drinks Pinot Grigio or. Sav. Blanc.WOW! That's a phenomenal looking butchers - I'd never be away from the place!!
