I sort of agree in general terms, I'd like to see a tax on supermarkets and the revenue used to give tax breaks to the specialist independent shops to encourage more of them to open.

But not really sure this should extend to putting fuel in a car. I mean what happened when post boxes first appeared? No more handing your letter and a farthing to a burly bloke on a horse and having a quick chat about the football and the weather.

Did people complain then? I don't know but since the post box system has been around for long before any of us were born we take it for granted that we can post a letter without any human interaction. I don't see why putting fuel in a car needs to be any different.

Does that, and what Macca's just described though, represent REAL progress? Not for me it doesn't!

So why do so many of us just settle for it, and allow ourselves to be manipulated like sheep to behave *exactly* as the powers that be want, in order for them to achieve their 'vison of the future'?

Think about it: we gladly sit back and let it happen, not just with this, but many other examples of changes to our lives that haven't resulted in an increased in 'feel-good factor', self-service checkouts in supermarkets, even scanners, so YOU do the whole bloody thing yourself, as an unpaid slave and high streets decimated, now largely ghost towns, because of soulless on-line shopping...

Does that also represent REAL progress?

WHY do we just sit back, time and time again, be what THEY want us to be, and essentially let them fuck us up the arse...?

not keen on unmanned, as its too easy for the scanners to be interferred with by con men.

Yes, but try answering some of the questions I posed!

Essentially, why do we just sit back, time and time again, and allow ourselves to simply 'bend' into accepting the 'progress' that we've given, when deep down we know full well that it's not REAL progress, but just something that's more convenient?

We self scan in Tesco, as we prefer it, plus you know how much you are spending. The other shops we just thrown stuff in the trolley like everyone else. although I did enjoy having your shopping packed for us when we were in the States.

    Great idea!

Thing is, how would we go about educating the masses into using them, who are too boring and bone idle to do anything but click on a mouse?

But not really sure this should extend to putting fuel in a car. I mean what happened when post boxes first appeared? No more handing your letter and a farthing to a burly bloke on a horse and having a quick chat about the football and the weather.
Well, firstly, as you say that was way before your time and mine, so you can't comment on what you don't know. Plus, *sometimes* genuine progress is made!

Post Offices, in general, are a pain in the arse a) because they're never conveniently located for car drivers, and b) unlike the petrol stations I use, are almost always busy/have queues (you KNOW how I feel about queues!) and full of old grans getting their pensions and stuff, holding back folks like me who simply want to send a parcel in the quickest possible time!

Therefore, I'd say that, certainly for me, post boxes are better than living without them and having to go into post offices themselves to post something.

Did people complain then? I don't know but since the post box system has been around for long before any of us were born we take it for granted that we can post a letter without any human interaction. I don't see why putting fuel in a car needs to be any different.
Like you say, who knows whether they complained or not. Was it not the case though, that back in the day, the man on the horse also called to collect the mail you had to send, as well as deliver it? I don't know, but if so, then having to find a post box near you now and post stuff yourself wasn't an upgrade!

We're also lucky that we have a post box within a 20 second walk of our front door, or otherwise I might feel differently about having to do that job myself... And yes I see where you're coming from about refuelling a car, but you can only comment on what facilitates your own lifestyle best and what you prefer.

And I much prefer rocking up to a nice quiet petrol station, filling up the car (or even better, as often happens abroad, fuel being dispensed for you by an attendant, who comes to your car, and also handles payment, while you sit there and do bugger all, lol - the best ones even clean your windscreen for you!), then going into the shop and being met by a friendly member of staff, and them SERVING *me*, than fucking about at a pump.

However, as they say, each to his or her own

    Marco.
