I take it then, from your reference to "oil burner", that you're not a fan of big turbo V6 diesels? Strangely, that seems to be common among some 'petrol heads', and I've never understood their bias

Not at all, i love a fast diesel (i fucking detest working on them though).
“Oil burner” is just a name most in the trade use when talking about a diesel car.
I had an A8 4.2 V8 TDI for a couple of weeks as a company car when it was first released was astonished at how good it was. The modern stuff is just amazing and very very clean, so much so that the DVSA had to make an MOT form that i have to fill in when it’s impossible to get a smoke reading when testing the emissions.
I think a lot of negative diesel comments are from people who have only owned diesels from the pre turbo days, and lets be honest, they were absolutely terrible.
The instant torque is kinda what made me go back to big V-twin bike instead of an in line 4 again, it’s nice to have a bunch of torque on tap without having to rev the nuts off the engine.
That said, i’d take a petrol car any day of the week over a diesel, or when the time is right, electric.

Surprised a diehard 'petrol head' like you, on both two and four wheels, would entertain them. Me? I *need* to hear the lovely roar of a powerful combustion engine (petrol or diesel)

Yes, me too, but i prefer speed over anything else and electric gives that in spades, and some.

None, Nick. No point, as a) I don't like that they stand for, b) I like to hear the roar of a sports exhaust when I'm driving, and c) I hate the styling of most electric cars!

So even if I drove one and thought that they were the best thing in the world (unlikely), the above, fundamentally important to me boxes, would still remain un-ticked
